Suntron Expands Tijuana Manufacturing Facility

Suntron Corp., a Phoenix-based contract manufacturer, has expanded its facilities in Tijuana, Mexico, as part of a strategy to attract U.S. customers looking for low-cost, nearby facilities.
The new facilities contain an additional 27,000 square feet of space as well as a class 100,000 clean room. The expansion added large-scale integration capabilities to the company's Mexico operations. The new clean room will allow Suntron to manufacture medical products, including medical electronic devices and high-end semiconductor equipment.
Plant manager Rod Gunther said the Tijuana facility is strategically important to Suntron because of its ability to manufacture goods inexpensively and ship them into the U.S. quickly.
"It's so much faster. The bottom line is if we can ship it by noon of that day, it's next-day delivery to anywhere in the United States. From China, it would take five to seven days," Gunther said.
He added Mexico is very competitive with China and Malaysia for low-cost manufacturing.
"It offers a low-cost region solution," he said.
The new plant is capable of manufacturing some of the most complex products made in the Tijuana and Baja California area, Gunther said.
The expansion created about 120 new jobs for the region, mostly for high-end technical, engineering and planning positions. Suntron already has added 75 new employees and plans to hire 50 more by September.
